How to design your employee experience

Throughout an employee's journey within and outside the organization, employee experience refers to how they feel. These moments within the employee lifecycle should always align with the desired employee experience. Understanding employee wants, needs, and preferences requires a human-centric design approach. In addition, employee experience design identifies and defines which experiences are valuable to the organization in what ways. Having a positive onboarding experience, for instance, improves employee productivity.
Crafting the employee experience
  1. Understanding the why
The first step in this phase is to explain why the specific experience is essential. This process is part of creating a better understanding of the experience and its implications for the individual and the organization.

  2. Determining who
Once clarity exists around why the particular experience is essential, the next phase focuses on understanding the consumer of the experience. It relies on qualitative and quantitative data to define user personas that shape the experience requirements.

  3. Defining what
This phase aims to identify the various touchpoints that shape the experience and determine what each interaction should be like. In this phase, employee experience maps are typically created to describe what the end-user experience should be at every point of interaction.

  4. Unpacking how
To determine when and where these interactions occur, storyboarding or mapping the experience is needed. Therefore, a more detailed description of the interactions is provided in addition to the touchpoints.
